BRITE programme manager, Lisa Luu, joined representatives from Midlands Innovation, STFC Hartree, Pharmaron and Metrodynamics at Knowledge Exchange Conference 2026 in Newport, South Wales to share our regional perspective and experiences so far.
This panel focused on “The future of place-based innovation: how academic-industry partnerships are powering the UK’s modern industrial strategy” was chaired by Richard Baker (University of Durham), who led insightful discussion on how ecosystems can support innovation.
The panellists shared perspectives from ecosystems and innovation zones of different sizes, sectors and maturity levels – bringing in discussion on the challenges faced, how to ensure equitable access, and how to support inclusive economic growth. Key highlights also included the role of academic organisations in ecosystems where devolved governments are absent, and the specific role universities can play to support wider growth outcomes. Eleanor and Kassim from Metrodynamics and Pharmaron, respectively, were able to add nuance to this conversation by applying a national and industry lens to the discussion.
