About the programme
BRITE is a three-year collaborative programme tackling barriers to biologics commercialisation by strengthening local biomanufacturing scale-up in the Liverpool City Region, supporting economic growth, skilled jobs, and improved health through locally developed therapeutics and diagnostics.
Powering Liverpool’s biologics future by turning world‑class discovery into scalable, life‑changing medicines
Liverpool is renowned for its biologics expertise, accounting for around 25% of the UK’s pharmaceutical market and valued at £46bn annually. Despite this strength, gaps remain in infrastructure to turn world-class academic discoveries into new medicines as they require sophisticated manufacturing processes and advanced facilities for the development and scale-up into clinical trials and delivery for patients.
Led by the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), BRITE received £4.74 million from Research England’s Connecting Capability Fund (CCF) to enable groundbreaking scientific research to develop essential capacity to grow the regional and national biologics ecosystem, addressing challenges in their manufacture and commercial scale-up.
BRITE's mission:
- Create a harmonised biologics innovation ecosystem
- Accelerate commercialisation and scale-up of biologics innovation in the Liverpool City Region
- Support workforce development, job creation & demand for high-skill jobs
- Driving economic growth & regional sustainability
Regional Benefits:
De-risking investment into future scale-up facilities:
- Specification and requirements mapped to deliver biologics at competitive Cost of Goods (COGS)
- Collaboration with LCRCA ensures that project is aligned with regional ambitions:
- Repurposing underutilised locations for scale-up activities & facilities
- Enhancing cross-sector collaboration
- Supporting development of next-generation academic and clinical entrepreneurs
