We are delighted to share with you the ecosystem mapping report for Year 1 of the Biologics Regional Innovation and Technology Ecosystem (BRITE) programme highlighting how the Liverpool City Region is uniquely positioned to become a national leader in biologics innovation and commercialisation.
Funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), BRITE brings together universities, businesses and regional partners to bridge the gap between pioneering academic research and the infrastructure needed to develop life-changing therapies. The report showcases the region’s strengths, including:
– Designation as the UK’s first Health and Life Sciences Investment Zone
– A thriving ecosystem of more than 300 life sciences businesses
– World-class clinical trials infrastructure
– Major industry partners including AstraZeneca and CSL Seqirus
– A shared ambition to create high-skilled jobs, drive economic growth and improve health outcomes.
This report outlines the strengths, challenges and opportunities within the Liverpool City Region biologics and biomanufacturing ecosystem. It uses a data-driven approach to identify and present practical actions to improve connectivity, strengthen commercialisation pathways, develop the workforce, and increase investment readiness of innovations. By addressing these barriers, Liverpool can build on its unique strengths to accelerate the development and manufacture of biologics and improve patient access to innovative treatments, ultimately unlocking significant economic growth for the region and the UK.
By connecting research excellence with industry expertise, BRITE is helping to build the foundations for the next generation of healthcare innovation while supporting regional prosperity.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to our partners and contributors, University of Liverpool, Liverpool John Moores University, Blockmakers, CoFactory, Health Innovation North West Coast, and LYVA Labs, whose expertise, collaboration and insights have been instrumental in shaping this report. Together, we are helping to strengthen the biologics innovation ecosystem and unlock new opportunities for research, commercialisation and regional growth.
